Barring any unforeseen circumstance, a leading airline in the country, Air Nigeria, is set to commence daily international flights to London, with effect from May 16.
The chairman, Air Nigeria, Dr Jimoh Ibrahim, who made this disclosure during an interactive session with media executives in Lagos, at the weekend, disclosed that the company had just acquired two A330-200 to commence flights from Lagos to Gatwick, North Terminal, adding that for any airline to survive, it must fly international routes.
To realise the objective of becoming a regional global industry player, he said effective May 1, the operations of the airline would be decentralised to international, regional and national operations, which would run as different entities and headed by an executive directors.
He said two aircraft had been allocated for international operations, while regional and national operations would get four and seven aircraft respectively.
Jimoh, who gave a historical background of the airline from 2004 to the point it was acquired by the NICON Group in April 2010, said the acquisition was borne out of national pride than for profit.
He noted that the airline, which was at the brink of collapse before NICON took over, had been successfully turned around and now in a stable condition, adding that the losses had been reduced and the airline was now moving toward profitability.
